Beating Diabetes

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2007. Over the next 8-9 years I was able to keep my HBA1C under 7%. Time marched on, I got older, had a child, did I mention I got older and led a very sedentary life. At the end of 2015 my Doctor told me I could no longer sustain my BSL's on oral medication alone. I was faced with the dreaded 'i' word.... insulin. Disappointed but aware that at the 10 year mark a Type 2 diabetic has a very high chance of transitioning onto insulin. Upset and very angry with myself, I accepted my fate. I worked with a diabetes educator and started injecting. My dose quickly climbed. So did my weight. A wonderful side effect of insulin use. Not only was I dealing with diabetes, I was also diagnosed as peri-menopausal in 2014. Fantastic! Over the next 9-10 months my weight ballooned to the heaviest I have ever been. 

Scared of falling into depression, I knew I HAD to do something. But I know me and I knew there was no way I could do this on my own. My family are loving and supportive but I needed more. Someone to help me, guide me, who understood the health challenges I was living, someone to encourage and make me accountable. It took a few weeks building up my courage, I was at a real low point. Being new to the area we live in, I used a local 'buy, swap and sell' Facebook page to reach out for a personal trainer. It wasn't long until a few people responded, others were tagged in the post. Being low on confidence, I was very particular in my needs of a PT. They needed to come to my home, and I wanted to do boxing and there was NO way in hell I was going to a gym! Thankfully Mark from Victor Harbor Boxing Club saw my post and tagged a local PT. Trainer Troy answered my call.  We spoke on the phone initially, talking through many things. By the end of the call I felt relieved, scared, excited and most importantly, hope. We set a time and day for Troy to come to my home to begin training. That was November 2016. The first night was mostly talking, getting to know each other, my goals, expectations from our sessions and going through the 'vitamins' I was taking. After nearly an hour, we did some boxing. Troy also recommended going onto magnesium and a multi-vitamin to start with. He also challenged me to a 14-day gluten free diet. We continued our weekly PT session at my home. 

After several weeks of one session a week boxing at my home, Troy suggested going down to the gym. With my confidence building I agreed and that was the beginning of working with weights. I also started a second PT session each week. Along the way Troy suggested more supplements, Berberine for my diabetes, Meta-Balance for my peri-menopausal ( read mood swings!!!) and Alpha Lipoic Acid. I am feeling the best I have in a very long time. Troy mixes up my sessions, keeps me engaged and entertained, shares his knowledge and reminds me I can do it, when I say I can't. 

Whilst we concentrate on weights, Troy knows when I need to 'box it out' after a crappy day. I enjoy the boxing, but can see the weight training has had major impacts on my health. With my diabetes educators nurse advice and permission, after telling her my PT sessions had changed to weight bearing excercises, I was able to self monitor my insulin and if my BSL levels were dropping, I could reduce my insulin dose. In the past 6-months I have reduced my insulin by 10 units.

I recently had my six monthly blood test/check up. The first test since I began working with Troy. The Nurse asked if I had seen my results. I think her words were 'stunning'. My hard work, under Troy's direction, has enabled me to improve on my HBA1C test, down from 7.5% to 6.5%. The goal is to be under 7%. My cholesterol is down, my blood pressure is down, I have lost 7kg and my kidney function has improved (not that this was ever an issue, but always nice to know I'm doing better). My Doctor was very pleased. "Whatever you are doing, keep doing it". She was also impressed at my reduction in insulin and happy for me to continue self-monitoring and reducing when needed. No more bloods for another 6 months.
Troy encourages me to celebrate the small 'wins' and how far I've come. He has quite literally helped me turn my life around. I am more confident and happy within myself. I am so thankful to Troy for taking me on as a client, I hate to think where I would be today had I not reached out and met him. 

Whilst I have a long road ahead, as long as I have Troy in my corner, I know I can become the best version of me, because I am worth it!
